The head of Ubisoft has confirmed there are a number of Assassin’s Creed remakes on the way, following earlier rumours about Black Flag.
At the current count there are at least nine Assassin’s Creed games in development, and while not all of them are mainline entries like Assassin’s Creed Shadows, the boss of Ubisoft has stated that: ‘The goal is to have Assassin’s Creed games come out more regularly.’
Exactly how different these experiences might be remains to be seen but according to Yves Guillemot there are multiple remakes currently in development, which matches up with previous rumours that suggest there are at least two.
One of these is believed to be Assassin’s Creed 4: Black Flag and while Guillemot didn’t mention any specific titles it’s almost impossible to believe it wouldn’t be one of them, given the pirate adventure has always been a fan favourite.
‘Players can be excited about some remakes, which will allow us to revisit some of the games we’ve created in the past and modernise them; there are worlds in some of our older Assassin’s Creed games that are still extremely rich,’ said Guillemot in a new Ubisoft blog.
A remake of the first Assassin’s Creed seems unlikely since last year’s Assassin’s Creed Mirage was purposefully very similar to it, but Assassin’s Creed 2 and 4 have always been the most popular entries in the franchise.
You could argue that remaking a more flawed entry like Unity (the Paris one) or Syndicate (the London one) has more to gain, but that’s not usually how these things work – although Guillemot’s vague comments leave open the possibility that there could be more than just two.
What’s likely going on here is that Ubisoft wants to get back to the days when they had a new Assassin’s Creed coming out every year. That’s impossible now, given how long new games take to make, but remakes can generally be made more quickly, and by less experienced teams.
Ubisoft will also be keen to have as much content as possible for their Assassin’s Creed Infinity live service hub. They still haven’t shown Infinity off in public yet, but it will be a way to access all the other normal games and provide daily challenges and tempting microtransactions.
The rumours from back in February stated that the Black Flag remake is codenamed Obsidian and is being developed by Ubisoft Singapore – which makes sense as they made Skull And Bones, which was originally inspired by Black Flag’s naval combat.
This year’s Assassin’s Creed Shadows is a mainline entry but it’s unclear what might be out next year. The next mainline sequel after that is what is currently codenamed Hexe, which is believed to centre around witch trials in Germany and is aiming for a 2026 launch.
‘There are a lot of good things to come, including Assassin’s Creed Hexe, which we’ve announced, which is going to be a very different game from Assassin’s Creed Shadows. We’re going to surprise people, I think,’ said Guillemot on the blog.
‘The objective is to have Assassin’s Creed video games come out extra commonly, however not for it to be the identical expertise yearly.’
