UPDATE: After being leaked by its own publisher, Civilization 7 has been confirmed as real, while Slitterhead’s release date is also announced.
You don’t get a better source for a leak than the game’s own creators and given Civilization 7 leaked due to accidentally appearing on 2K’s website, it was clear an appearance at Summer Game Fest on Friday night was inevitable.
Unfortunately, there was very little information, just a pre-rendered trailer and the promise that the game would be released in 2025, simultaneously on console and PC.
More information will be revealed later this summer, during a full reveal event, but that was all for now.
As for Slitterhead, its leak was obviously true too, because it also came via the game’s creators. That means the release date of November 8 is now confirmed, for PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 5, and PC.
The survival horror game – by a new Japanese studio staffed by veterans of veterans of Silent Hill, Forbidden Siren, Gravity Rush – looked promising in its annoucement trailer and it still looks good now in this new gameplay footage.
It features the gimmick of possessing people and animals to move around and, presumably, gain new abilities. That’s a gameplay mechanic we’ve not seen for a while and it’s always enjoyable when done well, so combined with the amusingly disgusting The Thing style transformations this will hopefully make up for the, so far, disappointing Silent Hill revival from Konami.
Original story:
The new 2K sequel at Summer Game Fest is not Borderlands 4 but strategy game Civilization, as new Slitterhead footage also leaks.
Ahead of Summer Game Fest’s official kick off, a number of leaks have already started to slip through the net.
There’s rumours of a Lego Horizon crossover and DLC for Alan Wake 2, but now 2K’s planned reveal of the next iteration in one of its ‘biggest and most beloved franchises’ appears to have been spoiled just hours before the show.
Earlier on Friday, a promotional banner for Civilization 7 appeared on 2K’s official website, which has since been taken down. Since it was on 2K’s own site there’s really no question of whether it’s legit or not.
Reddit and ResetEra users managed to screengrab the logo before it was scrubbed, so it has now been widely shared online.
While technically the next Civilization entry was announced in February 2023, it was never referred to as Civilization 7 – but this is almost certainly what 2K was teasing for Summer Game Fest, and not Borderlands 4, Mafia 4, or the next BioShock.
A rumour yesterday claimed Borderlands 4 would be revealed at the event, but the original leaker Kurakasis has since backtracked on that, saying he can ‘no longer guarantee’ the game will be shown at Summer Game Fest.
Gearbox has confirmed it is working on Borderlands 4 though, so it’s just a matter of time before it is announced – presumably before the film comes out in August.
In another leak prior to the show, the first gameplay trailer for Slitterhead was posted on Bokeh Game Studio’s YouTube channel early – confirming it will be released on November 8 for PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 5, and PC.
The footage has since been taken down from YouTube, but it can be viewed via Gematsu. The trailer shows you possessing human beings and animals as you fight mutated monsters, with a particular emphasis on combat over creepy scares.
Slitterhead is the next game from Silent Hill and Gravity Rush creator Keiichiro Toyama, which was announced back in 2021.
These both look set to be revealed during the main show at Summer Game Fest, which starts on Friday at 10pm BST in the UK.
