Metal Gear Solid Delta launch date leaked by GameStop and it is bizarre

Another recreation that has been attempting to maintain its launch date secret has had it leaked it out anyway, and it’s excellent news for Metal Gear followers.

There’s been plenty of advertising and marketing exercise round the remake of Metal Gear Solid 3 at the moment, including a trailer at the Xbox Games Showcase and more behind the scenes info from voice actor David Hayter.

However, everything so far has avoided mentioning a release date, even though it’s supposed to be out this year. Obsidian’s Avowed was just the same and, just like Avowed, Metal Gear has had its date leaked anyway – and it’s also November.

In both cases, it’s not clear what the secrecy is in aid of but while Avowed was leaked by the developer themselves, with Metal Gear it’s GameStop that accidentally revealed the release date of November 17.

That would put it in the same week as Avowed, which is November 12, but the date doesn’t seem to make any sense as it’s a Sunday, and no game is ever usually released on a Sunday.

However, November 17 is the release date of the original game, back in 2004 on the PlayStation 2, so that’s obviously not a coincidence.

The leak came from the official GameStop Twitter feed but was subsequently deleted and at time of writing has not been replaced.

So did it reveal accurate information that wasn’t supposed to made public yet or did someone just make up a date, based on the original game? But if they did… how did they not think they’d get in trouble for it?

Update: GameStop has claimed that the tweet was an error and that they used an ‘incorrect release date.’ The most likely explanation is that someone just googled the release date of Metal Gear Solid 3 and didn’t realise they were looking at the original and not the remake.

If you’re conspiratorially minded you could imagine that perhaps they’re just saying that to placate Konami, but either way it is likely the game’s release date will be later in the year and not this summer.

The good news for publisher Konami is that despite the controversy of doing a remake without series creator Hideo Kojima, Delta seems to have gone down well with fans so far.

Sunday’s gameplay trailer looked pretty impressive and while Kojima has long since left the series, Konami has been keen to point out that a number of veterans of the series are still working on it.

The only consistent complaint so far is the lack of a colour filter, as the original was bathed in a yellow-ish colour tone, whereas Delta seems to be going for straight photorealism.

It’s hard to imagine Konami wouldn’t offer a range of filters as options though, so hopefully we’ll get more info, and a confirmed release date, soon.
