Since it announced Terminator Zero in early 2021, Netflix has been dropping occasional sneak peeks at the upcoming anime set in the Terminator universe. Now, it finally has its lead voice ahead of its release later this summer.

Today, during the Next on Netflix Animation event, Netflix revealed that actor Timothy Olyphant is set to voice the Terminator. Olyphant is perhaps best known for his roles in Deadwood and Justified, and he’s also set to play a major role in FX’s upcoming Alien series.

Netflix also revealed more information about the show’s plot. Divided between two timelines in 2022 and 1997, Terminator Zero follows the past and present of the AI Skynet’s war against humanity. When a soldier is sent back in time to protect scientist Malcolm Lee, who is working to launch a competing AI system, Lee is also hunted by an assassin from the future and has to consider the morals of his invention.

Terminator Zero is led by Mattson Tomlin, co-writer on The Batman II and Project Power. It’s also animated by Production I.G, the studio behind FLCL, Psycho-Pass, and the recently released Kaiju No. 8.

While a lot of the information about Terminator Zero is still under wraps, Netflix released a teaser late last year and shared a few first-look images last month. Terminator Zero is headed to Netflix on August 29.
