Sonic Team studio head Takashi Iizuka needs to make a Sonic the Hedgehog role-playing recreation “in some unspecified time in the future” earlier than he retires from Sega.
In an interview with Good Vibes Gaming, Iizuka was requested if he would work on a Sonic RPG sooner or later, and stated he was thinking about doing so and shocked Sonic Team had but to do it.
“Personally, I actually like role-playing video games,” Iizuka stated. “The RPG recreation format is plenty of enjoyable, and I’ve even thought to myself, ‘You know, for the previous 30 years, we’ve not performed a Sonic RPG.’ And I’m questioning myself. ‘Why have not we performed a Sonic RPG in all this time? How have we gotten to 30 years with no RPGs?!'”
Iizuka stated he would “hopefully” get to work on a Sonic RPG earlier than he retires from Sega, however made clear there was nothing “concrete” presently. “So, I’d wish to hopefully work on a Sonic RPG in some unspecified time in the future earlier than I retire from Sega,” he stated. “But you understand, that is only a dream proper now. There are not any concrete plans at this level.”
The solely Sonic RPG launched to this point was Sonic Chronicles: The Dark Brotherhood, a 2008 Nintendo DS recreation. However, Mass Effect and Dragon Age developer Bioware labored on the challenge and never Sonic Team.
In our evaluate of Sonic Chronicles: The Dark Brotherhood, IGN wrote: “There’s enjoyable available, and the sport does choose up after the primary few hours, however we would be shocked to see many DS players get behind Dark Brotherhood whereas there are such a lot of superior role-playing video games on the platform. There’s design in right here someplace; it is simply misplaced within the shuffle of all of it.”
The closest that Sonic Team obtained to incorporating RPG-esque components in a Sonic recreation was the blue hedgehog’s first 3D recreation, Sonic Adventure, which carried out some RPG components. In a cut commentary for Sonic Adventure DX, Iizuka defined that after work on NiGHTs into Dreams, he approached Naka, proposing that Sonic Adventure needs to be an RPG-style recreation.
Despite Sonic Team not making a Sonic RPG, the event studio has labored on role-playing video games together with the aforementioned Nights into Dreams and the Phantasy Star Online sequence.
