Xbox Games Showcase

Xbox has another mountain to climb (Microsoft)

This year’s Xbox Games Showcase looks set to be pivotal for Microsoft, as it folds Call Of Duty: Black Ops 6 into its future plans.

Xbox hasn’t exactly had the best 12 months since its last showcase, between mass layoffs, disappointing first party games, declining console sales, and studio shutdowns.

Every summer showcase is important but this year carries an extra layer of weight because enthusiasm has never been so low. That’s true for both Xbox and PlayStation but uncertainty around Microsoft’s multiformat plans has done particular damage to their reputation.

While it remains to be seen whether Xbox acknowledges any of its troubles at the showcase, you can bet it’ll try to plaster over the wounds with as many shiny trailers as digitally possible. So what’s in the pipeline? Here’s all the confirmed, rumoured, and likely candidates for the showcase.

What has been confirmed for the Xbox Games Showcase 2024?

The only 100% confirmed title is Call Of Duty: Black Ops 6, which will be highlighted in a special, dedicated 30 minute presentation after the main event. Along with a gameplay deep dive, expect a lot of chatter about Microsoft’s plans for it and other Call Of Duty games on Xbox Game Pass.

You would assume that the previously detailed Indiana Jones And The Great Circle, Avowed from Obsidian, turn-based strategy game Ara: History Untold, Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024, and Towerborne are all lock-ins as they’re all supposed to be out this year.

However, rumours have suggested that some of these more imminent titles will get their own showcase a little later in the year. That’s not certain though and what does seem almost guaranteed to appear is Starfield’s Shattered Space expansion, which is set to come out in the autumn.

What games are rumoured for the Xbox Games Showcase 2024?

Gears Of War 6 is widely expected to be shown. The last mainline title was Gears 5 in 2019, so the timing feels right for another instalment. This might come bundled with the announcement of a Gears Of War remastered collection, which was also rumoured earlier this year.

A new Doom game from developer id Software is also heavily rumoured, which will apparently have a medieval theme and be titled Doom: The Dark Ages.

There are also several announced Xbox games we haven’t heard much from lately, including the Perfect Dark reboot, State Of Decay 3, and Contraband from Just Cause developer Avalanche – although rumours in the last few days suggest the latter may have been delayed.

Whether Fable will be present is a mystery though, as while it was featured last year nothing has been said about it since and there have been no rumours as to either its progress or whether it’ll be at the showcase.

Recent reports have claimed Microsoft will bring back Xbox 360 role-player Blue Dragon in some capacity, while Iron Galaxy is believed to be working on another Killer Instinct – although whether these are remasters or brand new games is unknown.

Microsoft has confirmed some third party titles will also appear, which might include Visions Of Mana – which also appeared at Xbox’s Developer_Direct this year. An Xbox Series X/S version of Final Fantasy 16 has also been rumoured, since Square Enix stated its intention to release more multiformat games.

The bigger multiformat question is whether Microsoft itself will announce more games for PlayStation 5 and/or Switch. There have been relatively few rumours recently but a multiformat Gears Of War remaster collection has been mentioned many times and Doom: The Dark Ages is believed to be multiformat from the start.

At the moment is seems unlikely that any of the games out this year, such as Indiana Jones, will be released on PlayStation 5, but Microsoft has repeatedly shown that it can change its mind very quickly. Either way, it wouldn’t be surprising if some more older titles were made multiformat, possibly including Starfield.

Will there be new consoles at the Xbox Games Showcase 2024??

Microsoft hasn’t been shy about its interest in developing a handheld device, and recent reports suggest a next gen portable console will be teased at the showcase, which could be a Switch-like hybrid device. That’s by no means guaranteed but Microsoft is likely to allude to its next gen plans in some way.

Earlier this year, images leaked of a white digital-only Xbox Series X which still hasn’t been officially announced. Considering Microsoft has stated ‘more console and controller options’ will be available this Christmas, it’s likely this could be shown too to rejuvenate some interest in its current console.

The Xbox Games Showcase will be available to stream across YouTube and Twitch on Sunday June 9 from 6pm BST in the UK, which translates to 10am PT and 1pm ET in the US.
