PlayStation finally announces State Of Play – but what will be shown?

After months of rumours, Sony has confirmed a PlayStation State Of Play presentation will take place this week, featuring 14 games in total.

Just as people were starting to think a PlayStation event may not happen this month, following weeks of speculation, Sony has snuck in at the last minute to confirm it does have an event planned for May.

The State Of Play event will debut on Thursday, May 30 at 11pm BST in the UK, which translates to 3pm PT/6pm ET in the US and 12am CEST on May 31 for those in Europe. The broadcast will be available to stream across YouTube, TikTok, and Twitch.

In the announcement post, Sony confirmed the broadcast would span 30+ minutes and will cover 14 PlayStation 5 and PlayStation VR2 titles in total, ‘including a look at PlayStation Studios titles arriving later this year’.

It’s important to note that this is a State Of Play presentation and not a PlayStation Showcase, which suggests it will be mostly populated with smaller announcements. The last State Of Play in January saw trailers for Death Stranding 2, Stellar Blade, and Hideo Kojima’s spiritual successor to Metal Gear Solid.

But what could be at this event? This might be the first time the new joint CEOs of PlayStation, Hermen Hulst and Hideaki Nishino, make an appearance – although some past State Of Play events have avoided any human interaction altogether.

As for the games, a new Astro Bot is expected to be announced from Team Asobi. A rumour suggested it could come out later this year, which would fill the empty void that is the PlayStation first party line-up for the coming months.

Reliable insider billbil-kun claimed a PC version of God Of War Ragnarök would be announced ‘very soon’ earlier this week, which makes sense for this event.

An update on developer Firewalk’s multiplayer shooter Concord is also possible, considering it’s still scheduled to be released at some point this year. There has also been whispers of a collaboration between Lego and Horizon Zero Dawn, although it’s unclear whether it’s a full game or some kind of Fortnite crossover.

This might be the place where some Resident Evil games are announced too, following various rumours about Code: Veronica and Zero remakes, and the next mainline instalment Resident Evil 9 – although the latter is believed to have been delayed.

Those announcements, however, might be held back for Summer Game Fest on June 7, which could also feature some PlayStation news.

We still haven’t had confirmation on the PS5 Pro, despite the specifications leaking, so that could turn up at either event as well. Although it’s perhaps more likely to be announced some time later in the year.

Regardless, it’s best to keep expectations in check, as it doesn’t seem Sony is treating this with the same significance as Microsoft and its Xbox Games Showcase on June 9.
